A selection of my current treat wines, that have possibly been getting me out of trouble on "date" nights during Lockdown!
2 x Chenin Blanc, Sur Lie Reserve, Laibach, Stellenbosh 2019
Sur lie wines are kept in contact with the dead yeast cells to enrich the wine. The wine is a refreshing colour with an orangery tint. Lovely mineral character combining with tropical and stone fruits. I think this pairs beautifully with many fish and I really enjoy it with hake.
2 x Riesling, ‘Expression’ Vincent Sipp, Domaine Agape 2017
Made using grapes from Grand Cru vineyards, leads to a complex and intense wine, that will linger on the memory. Works really well with Asian dishes and I also recommending trying with mature cheese.
2 x Sauvignon Blanc, Sancerre, Domaine Francois Crochet 2019
I am a sucker for good Sancerre, but it has to be good. This is a classic with a lovely grassy aroma and well-balanced ripe flavours. Utterly delicious with lighter meat dishes, like chicken or pork.
2 x Reserva Rioja Alta, Taron 2011
Wonderfully complex Reserva - soft tannin and a fresh acidity gives it great structure. For me this wine is perfect with my favourite cheeses.
2 x Shiraz, Grenache, Mourvèdre, The Navigator, Strandveld, Cape Agulhas 2017
This Rhone style blend is dangerously moreish and has a wonderful combination of plums, white pepper and cloves going on. Great with a rich winter stew.
2 x Chateau des Moines, Lalande de Pomorol 2016
This is a powerful wine, but still well balanced - think cherries and candied red fruits. Great wine with game as well as mature cheese.
